Club news

Not looking good for next week

For weeks now it has been hard not to mention the miserable weather in these newsletters but these past two days have been so nice and what a pleasant change it makes!

It has been great seeing so many members enjoying a game in nicer conditions and whatever you have planned for the weekend make sure it includes some play and practice time as here is a look at next week’s forecast.

There are no reservations on Saturday and only 10.30-11am on Sunday so we hope to see lots of you over the weekend.

It has been another busy week at the Proshop with a combination of fittings, lessons and unravelling lots of parcels!

Our decision to stock Callaway in addition to PING and TaylorMade has been well received and it means that we offer the complete fitting and stocking service for the three largest and market leading brands (by a long way!) in golf.

It is not just club sales where Callaway are enjoying great success it is also their golf balls and Odyssey putters too.

We have received the new Chrome Soft and Super Soft balls which have just launched and early indications are that they will build on the enormous success of 2017 in the ball market.

Odyssey putters need no introduction and combined with the updated choices of the hottest putter of 2017, the TaylorMade Spider, and PING’s offerings too, we will have a great selection to find the best putter for you.

We have also been busy unpacking new clothing and shoes too. The fantastic new Under Armour range is now in store and is fantastic. Latest styles of shoes have also landed from Foot-Joy and another of our new lines – Sketchers Shoes – are due in during the first week of March.

Get-Into-Golf

Over March and April we have many events planned to introduce youngsters and adults to golf and we would appreciate your help in spreading the word.
Dates available are:
• Sunday 18th March 10-2pm – Clubhouse/ York GC Open day. Taster sessions available for adults and juniors
• Saturday 24th March 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf session
• Monday 26th March 2-3pm Junior Get into Golf Session
• Thursday 29th March 2-3pm Junior Get into Golf Session
• Saturday 31st March 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf Session
• Sunday 8th April 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf Session

Professionals Day- Sunday 13th May

Since its introduction in 2016 our Professionals Day has proved to be one of the highlights of the year and with this year being my 10th Anniversary we are aiming to make this the biggest and best yet!

Rather than being held on a Friday we are hosting our event on Sunday 13th May. There will be numerous prizes to play for totalling over £3000. The popular format remains the same – AmAm. Teams can be mixed or all Men all Ladies and the event is open to members, members bringing guests and visitors. The cost is £100 per team which includes a dozen balls per team (3 each) and also a meal to have before or after your game.

Ladies Fashion Show – Tuesday 13th March 7pm

We are delighted to announce that we will having a Ladies Fashion Show on Tuesday 13th March at 7pm. The entire range of the popular Rohnisch collection will be on show. The show is open to all members and tickets are £5 to include a guest and a glass of wine each (please invite friends from local clubs to showcase not only the range of clothing but our clubhouse too!) Proceeds from the tickets will go to the Lady Captains Charity.

Resurgent Bubba?

It’s hard to know whether the quirky American is best known for his pink driver or for winning two Green Jackets, but seeing Bubba Watson struggle over the past 12 months – so much so that he was on the verge of retiring at the age of 39 – was a sad sight.

He plummeted from being a staple name inside the world’s top 10 to being well outside the top 100, so you would have been forgiven for not expecting much from him at last week’s Genesis Open. However, the 39-year-old returned to the top of the leaderboard and secured a two-shot victory in fantastic fashion.

So, what happened in those 12 months in between? Well, Bubba switched golf ball to a brightly coloured ball from a different manufacturer. Only recently has he reversed his decision and went back to the old faithful that helped him win two majors, and almost immediately he wins his 10th PGA Tour title. Coincidence?

 
 
 
Don't overlook its importance

For years one of the key questions when buying a new driver was: regular, stiff or x-stiff? It goes to show that people have always known that the shaft needs to be considered, but how much importance should we place on it?

Correct shaft, better statistics
Do you want to hit more fairways this season? The two ball flights you can see below perfectly display the risks of using a shaft flex or shaft weight that’s poorly matched to your swing speed.

A shaft that is too stiff or heavy will likely lead to a lower ball flight that can leak right (like the red arrow), whereas a shaft that is too light or flexible often kills distance and causes hooks (like the white arrow). Working together it won’t take long to narrow down the best shafts to optimise your distance and accuracy, helping you to hit more fairways.

Getting the right head to match the shaft will also play a big part, and one we could try is the PING G400 driver that is available in four different models, allowing us to find the perfect shaft and head combination for your game during a thorough custom fitting.

When and why?

When it comes to golf equipment, there are very few things we see neglected as much as grips, which is surprising when you consider they are your only point of contact with the club. If you keep on reading you’ll find out why it’s important to keep your grips in good condition and when you should look to replace them, as well as an offer that we're currently running in-store.

When should you consider a regrip?
Small amounts of wear occur with each use of your grips and it’s easy to miss early warning signs. As a rule-of-thumb, your grips should be replaced every 40 rounds, but this can be sooner if you practice regularly. For most of you, that would mean replacing your grips every year.

Why regrip?
Worn grips force you to hold the club tighter than usual, increasing pressure and tension in your hands, wrists and arms. This reduces the head speed you can create and therefore your distance. However, using a tacky grip that matches the size of your hands – no, it’s not one size fits all – will cater for a lighter pressure and give you more confidence on every swing.
