My trip away

Many thanks to TJ and Luke when they were ‘guest editors’ for last week’s newsletter.

As they mentioned I was incredibly fortunate to once again play in the TaylorMade Ambassador Cup with this year’s venue being the La Costa course in California. The trip also included a day at the TaylorMade headquarters in Carlsbad along with another day at their Kingdom Fitting Centre

As you can imagine it was a truly amazing experience. Seeing the various stages of product development, CAD designs, prototypes and product testing was just incredible. Following this up by seeing the custom fit facility was wonderful. We listened to their fitting experts tell us about their work and indeed we were shown details and given an insight about Dustin Johnsons and Tiger Woods latest fitting experiences which took place just a few days before we arrived.

As for the Ambassador Cup match itself we had a great game. Playing these matches is just a great experience. Team outfits, live scoring all-round the course, team Captains and staff zooming round on buggies it’s like a mini Ryder Cup!

Our game was a great match with us going 1 up after 6, level again, then 1 up after 12 but we got thumped by a run of 3 amazing birdies. A birdie on the 16th got us back to 1 down but we lost the 17th to shake hands.

A truly great experience

Whilst over in California we just couldn’t believe the weather news back home and indeed getting home proved to be eventful

I personally use one and think it’s great. Yes it works as a golf GPS which includes giving you round stats as it traces every shot but it also is fantastic as a fitness unit working with your phone to give you all the details of steps, calories burnt, heart rate etc.

Get-Into-Golf

Over March and April we have many events planned to introduce youngsters and adults to golf and we would appreciate your help in spreading the word.
Dates available are:
• Sunday 18th March 10-2pm – Clubhouse/ York GC Open day. Taster sessions available for adults and juniors
• Saturday 24th March 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf session
• Monday 26th March 2-3pm Junior Get into Golf Session
• Thursday 29th March 2-3pm Junior Get into Golf Session
• Saturday 31st March 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf Session
• Sunday 8th April 11-12pm – Ladies Get into Golf Session

Professionals Day- Sunday 13th May

Since its introduction in 2016 our Professionals Day has proved to be one of the highlights of the year and with this year being my 10th Anniversary we are aiming to make this the biggest and best yet!

Rather than being held on a Friday we are hosting our event on Sunday 13th May. There will be numerous prizes to play for totalling over £3000. The popular format remains the same – AmAm. Teams can be mixed or all Men all Ladies and the event is open to members, members bringing guests and visitors. The cost is £100 per team which includes a dozen balls per team (3 each) and also a meal to have before or after your game.

Ladies Fashion Show – Tuesday 13th March 7pm

Don't forget ladies we have our fashion show coming up on Tuesday 13th March at 7pm.

The entire range of the popular Rohnisch collection will be on show. The show is open to all members and tickets are £5 to include a guest and a glass of wine each (please invite friends from local clubs to showcase not only the range of clothing but our clubhouse too!) Proceeds from the tickets will go to the Lady Captains Charity.

Polar opposites

As the Beast from the East and Storm Emma collided to bring Arctic conditions to the UK for a few days last week, the very best players in the world were enjoying somewhat different temperatures as they battled it out at the WGC-Mexico Championship. Any of you who watched on the box over the weekend will have noticed the mammoth distances that some of the guys were hitting the ball in Mexico, but why was this?

How were they hitting mid-irons over 200 yards and driving the first green (316 yards) with 3-woods?

Well, the golf course they were playing is 7,800 feet above sea level, which reduces drag on the golf ball meaning it can travel further than it otherwise would. In the end, it was Phil Mickelson who took advantage of the favourable conditions the most and ended his exile from the winner’s circle with a playoff victory over compatriot Justin Thomas in the process.

This was lefty’s first win since the 2013 Open Championship but comes as no surprise as he has been showing signs of returning to his best with top 10 finishes in his last three events. Mickelson’s story is remarkably similar to that of Michelle Wie, who claimed her first win since the 2014 US Open at last week’s Women’s World Championship.
