The Season is Here

Can you believe it is The Masters next weekend? This is always a great event to watch and I’m sure this year will prove no different. Times are still available to play in the Masters event on the Sunday so if you would like a game and then watch the final round whilst having some food and drink in the clubhouse please book your time.

It certainly has been a busy week at the club since the clocks have changed with plenty of members playing and practising. Some of the tees have now been moved back and the mats have been removed from the fairways too so we will soon have the ‘full’ course in play.

It is fantastic to see that there are nearly 200 playing in the April Medal on Saturday. I’m sure many of you will be quite thankful how dry the course is when playing off the white tees for the first time in months!

Lessons & Fittings

As the season begins this is understandably a busy time of the year for lessons and fittings. Both TJ and I have been enjoying many sessions out on the range and whilst we have regular sessions with many of you we are always keen to work with more.

The introduction of Trackman for our fittings has been fantastic with some amazing results. Using Trackman for lessons too also gives another great insight to the pupils swing in conjunction to our coaching as well as proving useful for mapping shots too.

Here are two typical examples:

Fitting

This example shows the results of hitting the customers own 7 iron. As the numbers show the average ball speed was 91.6mph with an average carry of 114.6 yards.

The purple spots show the next shots hit using a different more suitable club. A slightly lighter shaft gave a slight increase in club speed but also improved the quality of the timing which saw an increase of ball speed 97.8 average. This resulted in the average carry increasing by 10 yards to 124.2

Lesson

The picture shows several 7 irons hit by the pupil to give typical examples of shots he would hit. In this case it was clear that a slight change to the set up was required combined with a different move in the early stages of the swing itself.

As the red spots show there was quite an improvement in both accuracy and distance

Carry average from 124 to 134.9

Ball speed average 92.7 to 98

Ladies Get into Golf Sessions

Since introducing the Ladies Academy we have enjoyed great success with many new Lady members joining as a result. We are about to start our Get-into-Golf taster sessions and would welcome any Ladies interested in having a go at this game we all enjoy.

The sessions are great fun and aimed at beginners or those who have a go in the past. They are free and open to anyone to come along and have a go. All equipment is provided.

Shoe Trade In

The sun is shining, your golf clubs are dusted off ahead of the new season, and weekly golf is on the horizon. We love spring.

Before you take to the course again this month, take a look at the condition of your golf shoes. Is it about time they were replaced?

Sergio gets some lip...

If you ever needed a lesson in not jumping the gun and sticking to the rules, Sergio Garcia showed us all what not to do over the weekend.

Playing against Matt Kuchar in the quarter-final of the WGC Match Play Championship, the Spaniard's makeable putt to win the 7th hole finished inches wide of the mark.

But rather than waiting for Kuchar to concede the putt, Garcia took matters into his own hands and it didn't end well. Watch this video to see what happened.

If at first you don’t succeed…

12-months ago, American Kevin Kisner woke up on the Monday after the WGC Match Play Championship nursing the disappointment of a thumping 7&6 final round loss to Bubba Watson.

However, this Monday, the mood in the Kisner camp was quite different after the 35-year-old overcame fellow American Matt Kuchar 3&2 to win his first WGC title and stake a major claim for a Ryder Cup berth ahead of next year's contest at Whistling Straits.

Victories over Tony Finau, Keith Mitchell, Ian Poulter (in a playoff), Haotong Li, Louis Oosthuizen and Francesco Molinari proved Kisner has the ability to go toe-to-toe with the world's elite - maybe he should have been at Le Golf National last year? The wonders of hindsight.

A world-first at the Jordan Mixed Open...

This week sees the start of a revolutionary new tournament, where 40 players from each of the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour and StaySure Tour (over 50s) will compete against each other for one trophy and the same prize fund.

The likes of Carly Booth, Jarmo Sandelin and Phillip Price will tee it up over three rounds in a tournament that is sure to snatch the headlines. Keep an eye on next week's newsletter for our report.

Spotlight: Callaway Apex (2019) irons
