Backwards event a resounding success
What great fun the backwards event was last Friday. It was fantastic to see 170 competitors take part during the day playing the 12 holes that were specially laid out.
There were some "beauties", but despite this the scoring was superb. Alistair Nicholl shot a mighty impressive 33 points to win with Mal Greaves 2nd with 31, and Mark Williamson 3rd with 30 pts.
Collette Watson claimed the ladies prize with 28pts and Mal, Richard Masefield & Derek Satterthwaite won the team prize with 84 pts. Well done to you all.
Throughout the day competitors were full of praise about how much fun the event was and I'm sure it will be a permanent fixture in the calendar. What was also great to see was the clubhouse packed in the evening so keep reading future emails regarding further Friday night events with great offers for food and drink afterwards.
2nd Team Trophy
Continuing the non-stop action, the 2nd Team trophy was played on Saturday in super conditions. Incredibly there were 5 pairs scoring nett 63:
Craig Roe & Tom Brown
Johnny Brown & Pete Hilton
Steven Yorke & Tom George
Neil Crapper & Chris Moss
Nick Jordan & Cowley Ryan
Well done all of you. Hope the play-off is not played as a 10 ball!!!
Joking apart it could have been a much larger play-off as there was 11 pairs scoring 64! Bet that was fun doing the countback comps team?!
Mixed Invitation
Our Mixed Invitation on Sunday provided further evidence of just how wonderful our greens are in particular. When at your own club things can often be taken for granted around you, but the constant praise was great to hear and mixed in with other great comments about the course condition, course improvements, range improvements to name a few, it bears well for our future. With the forthcoming investments being made in further projects, the future will continue to look good.
Captains Charity Stableford
The Captains Charity Stableford was played on the Bank Holiday Monday with 171 men and ladies taking part. Very well done to Sandra Linaker scoring a great 44 points to win the event.
What a busy and competitive past few days that was at the club! Both our Captains would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude for the tremendous support given by members by playing in these events. Both the Strensall backwards event and the Bank Holiday comp have boosted the Captains charity fund by over
£1000. Tremendous!

This week you may have noticed a fresh look to our clubhouse and it's surroundings. This is because York GC's very special gardening team have been applying a dab hand to our flower beds, and I think you'll all agree, the place looks fantastic.
Many thanks to Christine Smith, Maureen Shepherd and Sue Seaton, your work is hugely appreciated by all of us here at The York GC.
With news from our Greenkeeping team, here is Joe's report for the week:
This week on the course we have been working on the carry of the 3rd hole. This area was very overgrown and almost impossible to find balls. Through scarification and the removal of clippings we aim to encourage desired grass species and the visual appearance of this area. By removing the clippings we are preventing any nutrients returning to the soil.
Other major work has been the hollow coring of the 5th & 8th fairways. This task was essential in improving the drainage on these holes. With nearly 2 inches of thatch in places this was seriously affecting the way water infiltrated the surface. By removing this layer we have created a channel down to the sub soil. This process will need to be repeated to continue improving the situation but this is definitely a step in the right direction.
I would also like to thank everyone who sponsored me for walking the Yorkshire 3 peaks. All of our group finished under 12 hours and we raised over £2000.
