Despite the weather and the final day being on Monday, the Open certainly did provide some great viewing (I wonder how many cricket fans watched the Open on Monday as it was game over at Lords!)

Not one for gambling, I had my annual go in preparation for the event with Adam Scott to win and Danny Willet each way so I was enjoying the opening 2 rounds in particular, but with one round to go Zach Johnson at 33-1 was too tempting and thank goodness I was tempted. I have a feeling that Jordan Spieth will still win the USPGA and will reflect on possibly missing a calendar "Grand Slam" by one shot! 



It's still all systems go at the club as we continue combining an action packed calendar with members who cannot get enough golf and practice. The greens continue to be absolutely beautiful and keep being paid numerous compliments by members and visitors alike along with praise for the course also! 

Whilst the work on shaping and positioning of the "new" bunkers has been subject of some of the compliments, they will have lots of sand removed as we strive to achieve ideal conditions. Despite following guidelines and allowing for "settling", the sand is still too deep both on the base and on the faces which have resulted in some "awkward" lies which have tested one or two hamstrings!! 

The mission to improve our practice facilities is also still progressing well. Since the irrigation for the short game green was installed, along with regular attention, the playing surface has been improving week on week, and by next season the green will be being cut by the greens machines to achieve "playing conditions".

Trick Shot Supremo comes to York

Last Friday was a great success at the club as the trick shot supremo David Edwards entertained many members with his superb show. 

Thankfully we have not had any requests this week to make 6 foot long drivers or use a hose pipe for a shaft, and rather unsurprisingly no one has asked for 3 foot tee pegs and you will see why when you watch the video.

David spent the afternoon walking round the course before the show and recorded some of the "action" which he used during the evening in the clubhouse to a packed audience. Well done to Ralph on organising such a fantastic event and what a way to celebrate your birthday! Oops should I have mentioned that?



In addition to the work on the green, work has also started preparing another target green at 150 yards which will both look great, and also encourage more balls being hit down the centre of the range and reduce lost balls!

With so much use on the range the grass tee area gets a regular bashing and is a constant struggle to repair. The divot mix provided has now been changed to use a fast growing rye grass which will grow 4 times quicker than other grasses, so please fill in your divots after you finish.

Nearly 200 competitors played in the Royal Signals trophy on Saturday and yet again scoring proved tricky. Having said that, the top score on the leaderboard was Mark Metcalfe with 55 points, and I'm not sure who entered the scores out of his 3 ball so I cannot mock Mark until we find out!

As for the actual winners we will have to wait for a play-off as Grant Norton and Benedict Dance both scored 39 points to tie. Very well done guys.
