Scottie Scheffler ended his Sunday at Quail Hollow on a commendable 11-under-par, fives strokes ahead of joint-second-placed Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, and Davis Riley. The American was emotional as he lifted the Wanamaker trophy having secured his third major championship.

Beautiful yet deadly, Quail Hollow was testing players all weekend and spectators were witness to shrugs and sighs as well as brilliant feats of golfing magic. There was a tremendous uproar on the Friday when Si Woo Kim struck a perfect 5-wood tee shot on the 252-yard 6th hole to make the longest hole-in-one in major championship history.

Pros had been battling for the lead over the course of the tournament with Scheffler emerging as the one to catch come the end of round 3. The World No.1 made an eagle and three birdies within his last 5 holes to head into the Sunday with a three-shot-lead over Alex Norén.

While Scottie carded a disappointing two-over-par front 9 on his final round, Jon Rahm was climbing through the leaderboard with pace. The Spaniard made three birdies between the 8th and 11th holes to be just one stroke shy of Scheffler’s score.

Neither player could afford to let up with Scottie picking up birdies and gaining the strokes he lost on the front 9. Rahm was clearly feeling the pressure toward the end of his round and finished making bogey-double-double to fall five shots in three holes, and he finished in Tied 8th.

In his post-win interview, Scottie commiserated with Rahm’s finish while crediting his win to staying calm among the pressure “Finishing off a major championship is always difficult and I did a good job of staying patient on the front nine. I didn’t play my best stuff but I kept myself in it, stepped up on the back nine and had a good nine holes.”

Scheffler has proven time and again that he stands among the best in the game. With two Masters wins and a PGA Championship now under his belt, who’s to say we won’t see more major trophies lifted by the New Jersey native?
